Troop 397's First Summer Camp

Scouts practice an introduction to scuba diving in a pool.

The excitement was palpable as our scout troop embarked on their first week-long summer camp at the picturesque Camp Crooked Creek. Nestled amidst 1,000 acres of rolling hills covered with oak, hickory, and beech trees, along with the serene 70-acre John Barr Lake and over ten miles of hiking trails, this camp promised a week filled with adventure, learning, and unforgettable experiences.

The scouts arrived with eager anticipation, ready to turn our campsite into their home for the week. Gear was unpacked, the dining fly was set up, and the campsite quickly transformed into a bustling hub of activity. For many, it was their first time camping for an extended period, and the sense of camaraderie was immediately evident as they worked together as a team.

Initially, the scouts planned to participate in the first-year scouting program offered by the camp. However, due to their rapid pace of advancement, it was decided they would be better served by participating in the camp’s merit badge programs. With help from the Camp Crooked Creek staff, they joined a variety of programs that sparked their interest.

Daily Routine

Each day began with the Senior Patrol Leader waking up the scouts for personal hygiene and campsite chores. This was followed by the morning flag-raising ceremony and breakfast in the dining facility.

Activities

Swimming: Mornings started with fun and fitness at the pool, where experienced instructors guided the scouts in practicing various strokes and techniques, ensuring everyone felt comfortable and safe in the water.

First Aid: After swimming, the scouts attended an essential first aid workshop. They learned the basics of treating wounds, performing CPR, using an Automatic Electronic Defibrillator, and handling other medical emergencies. This session was crucial for building confidence in their ability to handle real-life situations.

Sailing: Some scouts were introduced to the art of small boat sailing. The gentle breeze and clear waters of the lake provided the perfect setting to learn how to navigate and control a sailboat. Laughter and cheers filled the air as they mastered the basics and enjoyed the thrill of sailing.

Wood Carving and Leatherwork: Over in the frontier camp, one team of scouts gathered daily for wood carving lessons. Armed with carving tools and blocks of wood, they crafted unique pieces to cherish as mementos of their time at camp. The second team chose to complete the leatherworking merit badge, making useful and decorative items, from belts to keychains. The satisfaction of creating something with their own hands was evident in their proud smiles.

Digital Technology: Technically inclined scouts delved into the world of digital technology, exploring computer software, networks, and internet safety. This session provided a modern twist to traditional scouting activities, showing how technology can complement outdoor adventures.

Citizenship in Society: Understanding their role in society and the importance of being responsible citizens was the focus of the scouts participating in citizenship in society. They engaged in discussions and activities highlighting community service, leadership, and social responsibility. This thought-provoking session inspired them to be active and positive members of their communities.

Wilderness Survival: Each day concluded with a thrilling wilderness survival workshop. Scouts learned how to build shelters, find food, and navigate using natural indicators. This hands-on experience in the wild was both challenging and exhilarating.

Scuba Diving: One of the most anticipated activities was the introduction to scuba diving. Under the watchful eyes of a certified instructor, the scouts donned their scuba gear and took their first breaths underwater. The underwater world opened up a new realm of exploration and wonder, leaving them fascinated and eager for more.

Reflections and Farewell

The final day was a time for reflection. Around the campfire, scouts watched various scout-led skits and shared their experiences, the new skills they had acquired, and the friendships they had forged. It was clear that the week at Camp Crooked Creek had been transformative. The scouts returned home with a sense of accomplishment, ready to apply their new knowledge and eager for future adventures.

Conclusion

Camp Crooked Creek provided an extraordinary backdrop for our scout troop’s first week-long summer camp. The blend of traditional and modern activities ensured that each day was filled with learning, growth, and fun. This week not only strengthened their scouting skills but also instilled a deeper appreciation for nature, community, and teamwork. As they look back on this incredible experience, the scouts are already counting down the days until their next adventure.
